I am from the United States and have a residence permit for studying in The Netherlands for a period of 6 months, from January 10 until July 10. After July 10th, my residence permit in The Netherlands, and maybe the entire Shengen Area will expire. But, I would like to stay with family friends in Belgium until mid August in order to improve my French. Is it possible for me to spill over from a Residence Permit onto a Short Stay Visa legally? Would I have to extend my Residence Permit in The Netherlands just to vacation in Belgium? And what are the consequences for returning to the United States with an expired Residence Permit? Thank you in advance!
