| I have a residence permit for studying in The Netherlands for a period of 6 months, from January 10 until July 10. After July 10th, my residence permit in The Netherlands, and maybe the entire Shengen Area will expire. But, I would like to stay with family friends in Belgium until mid August in order to improve my French. Is it possible for me to spill over from a Residence Permit onto a Short Stay Visa legally? Would I have to extend my Residence Permit in The Netherlands just to vacation in Belgium? And what are the consequences for returning to the United States with an expired Residence Permit? Thank you in advance!

| Each Schengen State has entered (a long time ago) into a separate agreement with the US allowing US citizens to enter its territory and stay up to 3 months.
Therefore, you should be allowed to stay 3 months in Belgium without a visa. I would recommend however for you to check with the US consulate in Belgium.
There would be no consequence if you return to the US with an expired residence permit. The American authorities are not supposed to check the legality of your stays in foreign countries. | |
