I'm confused over what my visa means.

I'm now a non-EU citizen as a student in France.

My Visa has 6 months
It has France (+1 transit )- what does (+1 transit) mean?
And what does type D mean?

It mentions the duration of stay as XXX days. why XXX?

And it says here Dispense temporaire de carte de sejour- Because of this I was told that I cannot apply for residence permit.

So if I want to travel to say Holland or Italy at the end of my stay (after 5 months here), can I?

Hello,

D means you have a long term visa, more than 3 months.

1 Transit means you are allowed to travel through one Schengen country on your way to the country that has issed your visa.

Since you do have a residence permit per se (because you have been exempted from it), your current visa does not allow you to travel visa free in the Schengen area. Should you want to visit a Schengen country during the course of you stay, you will need to apply for a visa with the Consulate of the country you wish to visit.

Regards.

Hi, the reason why irulius asked this question is because of a freak accident that happened last friday.

we both have the same visa and we are based in france. I have FRANCE (+1 transit Schengen) visa with last from 1st jan till 1st july 2007 which also exempts me from the titre de sejour.

Last friday, i wanted to go to berlin and subsequently eastern european countries for a 2 week holiday, by taking a train from Lyon to Geneva, and then take a plane from Geneva to Berlin. However upon reaching berlin, i was denied entry to the country and was detained for 12 hours and promptly deported back to geneva... basically a holiday goine wrong.

I called my ambassador in berlin who tried to convince them that i had the valid visa that allows me to travel freely, and even if i had a wrong visa, i could still travel as a tourist for up till 90 days since i am holding a Singapore Passport. However that said that the visa takes PRIORITY over my passport and therefore i am considered a student in France and not a tourist.

When i came back from my "holiday" the next day, i called my other Ambassador in Paris and he too said that there is absolutely nothing wrong with my visa as it allows me to travel freely.... I also went down to the Prefecture in Lyon and they too said that the fault lies with the Germans as they clearly got it wrong.

But right now, what u are saying above is the same as the Germans, meaning my visa only permits me to stay in France and no where else.... But i am REALLY REALLY confused....

cos right now it's you and the germans against 2 Ambassadors and the Lyon Prefecture.... and i really have no idea who is right and who is wrong now....

PLEASE ENLIGHTEN me.... thanks.

Hello,

A D visa + 1 Schengen transit with "dispense de carte de séjour" does not allow to travel visa free in the Schengen area. It only allows to reside in the country that has issued the visa in question. On the way to that country, 1 transit, and only one, is allowed in a Schengen country. Once that 1 transit has been used, the holder cannot enter ot transit in a Schengen country other than the one which has issued the visa.

Regards.
